Content: In Hong Kong, more than five hundred thousand container units per year are handled by small mid-stream cargo operators at the public cargo working areas (PCWAs). Unfortunately, over 600 fall accidents were reported at the PCWAs between 1995 and 2005 resulting in more than 45 deaths. This talk will present a study of Six Sigma applications to reduce fall accidents at PCWAs. With help from the Logistics Cargo Supervisors Association and the Hong Kong Occupational Safety and Health Council (OSHC), we conducted focus group interviews and questionnaire surveys at the PCWAs. Data reflected that the ‘jumping from one container to another’ and the ‘resting and standing on a lifted container’ are the most hazardous acts. During the presentation, the Six Sigma methodology will be introduced. In particular, the applications of the Six Sigma process on occupational safety studies will be discussed. The presenter would like to acknowledge Hong Kong OSHC for supporting of the original study.
Remarks: No attendance certificates will be issued to those who arrived at or after 7:15pm. Certificates without stamp will be distributed to IOSH members during registration. IOSH Branch helpers will validate the certificates by stamping after the seminar. Certificate without stamp is invalid.
