Speaker: Nigel Heaton is the CEO of Human Applications, an UK-based risk management organisation. He provides risk management consultancy services to clients in Europe, Far East and the USA. Nigel is a Chartered Member of IOSH, a Member of the Institute of Risk Management and a Fellow Member of the Ergonomics Society. He has been working in Hong Kong since 2003 for services to the Hong Kong Police Force and the ICAC. Nigel co-authored and delivered IOSH’s original suite of risk assessment and risk management training courses in 1993. Human Applications also acts as technical consultant for producing the revised “Working Safely and Managing Safely” courses for IOSH. He currently conducts training courses on risk management, ergonomics, and business risk for IOSH.

Content: The knowledge and skill of business risk management help safety professionals to link safety issues into a boarder spectrum of corporate risk management framework. This seminar will highlight some of the key elements on this approach. The speaker will discuss the links between safety and corporate risk, with case study sharing on disasters at Texas City; Perrier and SARS to demonstrate on how they can adopt a wider business risk context. The seminar will concentrate on effective approach of risks management at corporate levels, including:- 1. propose a simple framework for systemic risk management, such as compliance to Sarbanes Oxley (SOX) and the internal control based on the Guidance for Directors on the Combined Code (1999); 2. apply International Standards such as ISO 18001, ISO 14001 and proposed standards for risk management and business continuity planning of an organisation. The seminar will also look into the subject of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and suggest a pro-active safety management system.
