Content: MTR Corporation is now managing one of the world’s most heavily utilized railway networks in Hong Kong which carried 1.69 billion passengers in 2011 (around 4.5 million passengers per day) and is also operating railway businesses in 5 cities outside Hong Kong carrying a total of 1.1 billion passengers last year. The safety and reliability performance of its Hong Kong heavy rail network is among the very best in the world according to the international benchmarking results. How did MTR manage the safety and risks of its railway and workforce through the numerous changes and network expansion in the past third decades ? This seminar will share the company’s journey in safety and risk management which started off with a Hazard and Operability Study (HAZOP) in train door in 1980s and followed by the setting up of the Safety Management System in 1990s, system assurance processes for new railway extensions and challenging retrofit projects like Platform Screen Door, human factors programme, and finally the Corporate Safety Governance framework to transfer its safety management model and good practices to new railway businesses in Shenzhen, Beijing, London, Stockholm and Melbourne, etc. The seminar will also describe the company’s award-winning corporate-wide Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) framework which was tactfully crafted to closely work in tandem with the railway safety risk management system. The ERM framework is now an essential and integral part of corporate governance to help in sustaining business success and creating value for stakeholders and was recognized by the industry with three outstanding awards from the UK Institution of Risk Management in 2010.
