Content: In the talk, the speaker will explore the likely unintended consequences of a small, quite insignificant change to a technical standard within the UK in 1991 that 'may' lead to a death rate of UK workers from silicosis some 10 times greater than deaths caused by exposure to asbestos. HSE report for 2016/2017 state that UK asbestos deaths are circa 4,500 per annum. Anecdotal evidence suggested by the HSE in the UK has estimated the 10 x death rate figure. The high speed concrete and masonry cutting activity is likely to cause these deaths be exposure to high concentrations of respirable crystalline silica and is in use across most of the world. The speaker will share with the attendees what he have done personally to endeavour to have some scholarly research of the anecdotal evidence to either prove or disprove it, as well as raising awareness of the problem within the energy and utility industries in the UK and, creating a national record of persons exposed to respirable crystalline silica in the past.
