Our history
IOSH was founded in 1945, when the
Institution of Industrial Safety Officers (IISO) was formed from a
division of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents.
In 1981, IISO was renamed the Institution of Occupational Safety
and Health. The following year, the Institute of Municipal Safety
Officers merged with IOSH.
In 2002, we were awarded a Royal Charter. Three years later we
began to award Chartered Safety and Health Practitioner status to
recognise individual professionalism and a commitment to ongoing
learning and development.
IOSH has had charitable status since 1962.
