Council
The Council is the representative body of
the Institution and is the ultimate champion and conscience of the
Institution’s integrity and ethics. It’s made up of elected members
that provide advice and debate on strategic, professional and
policy issues and represent the views of members to the Board of
Trustees.
The key responsibilities of Council are
to:
- elect the presidential team
- approve appointments of the Nominations
Committee, Risk Management and Audit Committee, Board of Trustees
and Chairmen positions of the Standing Committees
- review the performance of the Board of
Trustees
- propose necessary changes to the Charter and
Byelaws, for approval by members and the Privy Council
- propose resolutions to be considered at
General Meetings
- consider and approve Regulations made by the Board of
Trustees.

Electing representatives
All corporate (CFIOSH, FIOSH retired, CMIOSH and MIOSH
retired) and non Corporate (Affiliate, Tech IOSH, Grad IOSH
and Honorary Fellows) members can now play a full role in the
Council election process by standing for places on Council and
voting in the annual election.
Articles calling for candidates to stand for election and the
details of the process are usually in the March, April and May
editions of the Safety and Health
Practitioner and Connect e-bulletin.
The deadline to send us completed nomination forms is usually
the last Friday in May and then voting slips and candidates’
details are sent by the Electoral Reform Society to members
eligible to vote by the end of June. The results of the election
are usually announced in August.
Successful candidates become members of Council at the Annual
General Meeting in November and remain on Council for a three-year
term.
Election of President Elect
Council members can stand for the position of President Elect
(who, under normal circumstances, will become President) by
completing a nomination form along with a statement, which is then
issued to all Council members at the end of August.
Council members then vote on the second day of the September
Council meeting, when the name of the successful candidate is
announced.
Vice-President Elections - a new team to represent IOSH
Vice-Presidents will support the Presidential team in their work
with the media, at events, and at lobbying and profile-raising
meetings.
You’ll see articles in Safety and Health Practitioner
(SHP), Connect e-bulletin and on our website, when we’re
looking for candidates. For a nomination form, contact the
Chief Executive’s office.
There are six Vice-Presidents on Council, two retire each
year, therefore an election takes place for two new Vice Presidents
every year:
Tim Briggs and Declan Gibney for 3 years
Dr Karen McDonnell and Barry Tupper for 2 years
John Lacey and Andy Lo for 1 year
John McG Norton-Doyle came off after 1 year
(Dr Karen McDonnell was re elected)
