Jackie Cambridge, MSc, BSc, CMIOSH, MIIRSM,
Chartered Fellow CIPD
Jackie has worked in the field of occupational health and safety
for over 18 years, she was initially an HR manager for Royal Mail
letters before opting to specialise in occupational health and
safety. After a short spell gaining a wider perspective of
different organisations she joined Peterborough Hospitals NHS Trust
managing the Occupational Health & Safety Department. The Trust
had not employed anyone within the safety role for three years and
as such she had the opportunity to start with a blank canvas.
Developing a whole structure for safety within the organisation
including the H&S policy and procedures for the range of risk
assessments. As well as the traditional accident investigation,
safety inspections, safety audits, production of policies and
procedures, production of safety statistics she also managed the
occupational health service which gave her, her first opportunity
to see first hand the interaction, or not, between occupational
health, H&S and HR.
In her time at the Trust she co-coordinated a large Trust wide
initiative on good housekeeping and received an award from the
Health & Safety Executive for this contribution. The trust also
achieved high standard in its many audits receiving very positive
feedback from recent Kings Fund, CNST and Controls Assurance audits
who all commended the Trust on its H&S systems.
She established Cambridge Safety in 1998, with her main roles
being the development and training of a variety of Nebosh
environmental and H&S qualifications. She continues to be a
health and safety practitioners completing a range of projects for
organisations as diverse as bio-technology to food production,
incorporating traditional H&S issues, the management of people
and health and safety climates.
Despite focusing primarily on health and safety Jackie has
supplemented her H&S qualifications with an OU degree on the
Environment. She has just completed a 2 year programme studying
part time with Nottingham University, having just completed a MSc
in workplace health. This was a brand new programmes developed by
the university and Institute of Work, Health and Organisations to
bring together health and safety, OH and HR professionals to
explore health issues which effect modern working life. Having felt
that she focused a little too much on “safety” issues she decided
this was more of a challenge than embarking on the more traditional
MSC taken by H&S professionals. This gave her a more focused
and in-depth knowledge of the various interactions effecting the
individual, organisations and society which need to be taken into
account when dealing with the management of workplace health,
stress, organisational culture, absence management and changing
attitudes.
The National Board in Occupational Safety and Health is the UK’s
leading professional examination body for health and safety,
setting and marking professional examinations at a variety of
academic levels. Jackie has been an examiner since 1998, working on
the Nebosh certificate, construction certificate, environmental
certificate and health and safety diploma marking both examination
scripts and assignments. She is currently one of the two principal
examiners for the NGC1, The Management of H&S qualification,
Nebosh’s most widely taken examination.
