in IOSH Networks Conference 2011

Networks Conference 2011
was held in Leicester on 8-9 November 2011 and representatives of
committees, groups and branches of IOSH including delegates from
Singapore, Middle East and Caribbean gathered at the Conference
under the overarching aim of improving workplace health and safety
for people around the world. Our Branch Chair, Ir Y. M. Poon, and
Vice Chair, Dr Sammy Wan, attended the event during the period.
After arrived Leicester
on 7 November 2011, Ir Y. M. Poon and Dr Sammy Wan had an in-depth
and extensive discussions with our International Officer, Ms Gisela
Derrick, on the proposed branch budget plan for year 2112/13 based
on the new branch funding system. Current situation in Hong Kong
and numerous operational constraints and challenges were
highlighted in this casual meeting. A report was specially prepared
and it was submitted to International Office together with our
revised branch budget plan for evaluation by the Member Advisory
Panel (MAP). Our Honorary Advisor, Mr Alex Tse, has also been
appointed as one of the members of this Panel for the discussion
and vetting of various budget plans.
After the causal meeting,
a Chair Training Session was arranged to all chairs including Ir Y.
M. Poon, in order to develop leadership, organizational and
communication skills for bringing committees, groups and branches
of IOSH to new levels of success. At the same time, Dr Sammy Wan
visited the Grange (the Headquarters building) and conducted some
casual meetings with other branch representatives and staff members
of Headquarters. A few presentations were delivered by Mr Ian Smart
(Head of Communications), Tim Walsh (Media Manager), Mr Shaun
Gibbons (e-Editor) and Claire Ball (Networks Officer). There were
plenty of fruitful discussions about the media management,
communication, webinar and website. A guided tour was arranged by
Ms Gisela Derrick at the Grange and you can refer to a separate

In the morning on 8
November 2011, a Strategy Meeting for the International branches
was held to review the international strategic options and tactics
and discuss the roles of specific branches and groups in
implementing various options and tactics. Several group discussions
were held during the meeting.

The Network Conference
started off by a welcome speeches delivered by President, Mr Steve
Granger, followed by Chief Executive, Mr Rob Strange, OBE., on the
IOSH Development. Numerous sharing sessions and group discussions
on strategy, membership, finance, events of IOSH were organized
during the conference. The new Membership Division was explained
and a rundown of the new events team was also given.
During the event the
Annual General Meeting in the late afternoon, Mr Subash Ludhra took
over the presidential regalia from Mr Steve Granger, while Mr
Gerard Hand became IOSH’s new president elect. During the meeting,
the Board of Trustees also said goodbye to Mr Nick Burraston, OBE
after six years as chair, with Mr Keith Underhill taking over the
post.

After the Annual General
Meeting, drinks reception was arranged in the Grove Bar for
networking, followed by an Annual Dinner in the Grove Suite. During
the Annual Dinner, fellowship awards were presented to our past
president, Ir Dr Vincent Ho, and our branch member, Ir Dr King
Wong, for their outstanding accomplishments in OSH in previous
years.
The Conference continued
on 9 November, 2011 and various presentations and group discussions
were arranged after the welcome speech delivered by the new
President, Mr. Subash Ludhra. A detailed look at the year’s events
in communications, including the introduction of the Member
Advisory Panel and the progress of Life Savings campaign were
highlighted during the presentations and group discussions. Ir Y.
M. Poon delivered a speech with Mr Darren Brunton, Vice Chair of
Singapore Branch, to introduce our Branch effort to provide
guidance and assistance in the launch of the Singapore Branch. Just
before the conference’s close there was a chance to quiz the IOSH
executive directors team on latest developments within the
Institution, as well as plans for the future.
