Overview

Alan Bradshaw's presentation, which will be followed by a brief Questions and Answers session, will focus on a new approach to managing work-related stress based around Stress Management Competencies - the behaviours required by line managers to prevent and reduce stress at work.

A four-year research programme sponsored by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), and Investors in People (IIP) led to the development of a management competency framework for preventing and reducing stress at work. The presentation provides an overview about what the research uncovered, about managers behaviours and how the associated tools and interventions can be used to up-skill line managers.

Alan compares and contrasts this new management competencies' approach to the HSE Mangement Standards. He explains where they overlap, how the two approaches differ, and why the management competencies approach is likely to contribute to a more positive and lasting impact on staff well-being.

What's in it for me

Attendees learn about a new set of stress management tools they can acquire and use, either in-house or as practitioners. The tools relate to management skills and behaviours, they provide much greater opportunity for Health and Safety professionals to cross boundaries and work collaboratively with Human Resources and line management colleagues. This not only increases the likelihood of improved well-being outcomes at work, but this also opens up significant career and business development opportunities.

Who should attend?

Health and Safety Managers and Consultants, but also for Occupational Health Professionals, Staff/Organizational Development Professionals, and any managers with an interest in staff well-being and work related stress issues.
