Other highlights of the day:

Presentation to Lawrence Baldwin:

Donald Macfarlane presented Lawrence Baldwin with an engraved pair of whiskey glasses to celebrate seven years of loyal service to the branch exec committee. Work and family commitments take him away for a while but he vows to return and play a full part in branch activities again after a break. Donald thanked him for all his support particularly as treasurer over the last few years.

Notification of Branch name change - North East of Scotland Branch:

Norita Robinson gave a short presentation on the rationale for the branch name change to “The North East of Scotland” branch. She also explained that branch membership had grown from 680 to 740 over the last year.

A Key Note Address by Gerard Hand – President Elect IOSH, crowned the event:

Gerard Hand gave a presentation on “Sensible and Pragmatic Risk Assessment”. This included a resume of his working life and ambitions as a lad in Halifax where he started as a trolley pusher and gradually ascended to 'Health and Safety and Fire Manager' for the whole of J Sainsbury. The stories he told provided excellent examples of some wayward thinking in the risk assessment process and the need to challenge why the H&S advisers and managers are considered the experts. – They are facilitators of the regulations.

After a short time for questions, Donald MacFarlane thanked Gerard for his presentation and presented him with a speaker’s gift.
