IOSH SOUTH EAST BRANCH EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

Sally Parkes - CMIOSH, Chair and BEDA

I joined IOSH after completing a NEBOSH diploma whilst trying to figure out what I really wanted to do with my life.......... I’ve never left! Something got under my skin and the passion instilled by my tutors for ensuring that people come home from work as healthy and together as they went to work continues to grow, 13 years later. Since then I have gained hands on experience managing safety in organisations large and small, initially as a corporate safety manager and then as a self-employed consultant. I believe knowledge and competence are the keys to successfully managing health and safety and one of the highlights of the past 12 years has been the time I spent training at a local college and celebrating with my students as they too gained their NEBOSH diplomas.

After a few more years working in Environmental Health, I joined HSE in 2010.  In my short time in the executive, the need to protect employees’ safety and health has been brought sharply back into focus.  The demands made on IOSH members continue to grow, and the importance of keeping up to date with legislative changes, political and cultural attitudes and best practice is as important as ever.  I hope that as Chair of the South East Branch, with the support of the talented and experienced committee, we will continue to provide our 1800 members with a challenging and varied programme of events and provide a strong local support network where you can meet other safety professionals to share experiences and develop your skills.

Stewart Proctor - Grad IOSH, Vice-Chair and BEDA

My first taste of health and safety was when I was ‘volunteered’ to be a site safety representative during the late 1980’s. I have been a member of IOSH since 2003 when I started studying for my NEBOSH Construction Certificate. Having achieved this I completed the NVQ4 in Health and Safety. I then undertook my entry examination to the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment along with becoming a registered member of the Association of Project Safety.

I have worked as a company health and safety adviser, trainer and consultant. Most of my industry experience has been in mechanical and electrical engineering along with the office environment. With my experience I have gained entry into the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE).

I am passionate about changing attitudes and perceptions towards health and safety and a firm believer in accredited health and safety management. I believe that continual training and education is the key to providing good risk management.

Retirement now beckons.

Flavio enjoys training and is a fully registered tutor and NVQ assessor in health and safety.

Flavio has served on the IOSHSE executive committee since 2000 where many members will have known him as BEDA

Mike Walters - CMIOSH, H&S Regulator Liaison

Mike has worked for the HSE since 1993 when he started as an Agricultural Inspector. He has had a number of jobs over the years including working as part of the Backs! 2005 project team and also had a secondment to the Rural, Agricultural & Allied Workers section of the Transport & General Workers Union (TGWU).

Mike is currently Principal Inspector responsible for HSE Inspectors in Kent, a group which covers all HSE enforced premises in the county other than fairgrounds and construction sites. Mike has recently joined the committee to help keep IOSH SE up to date with current HSE & Local Authority priorities.

Julian Mills - CMIOSH, Events Secretary

Julian’s background lies in heavy engineering.  His interest in the management of health & safety grew when elected to the post of Union Appointed Safety Representative.  Diversification, coupled with education saw his career move further into the field of health & safety management.

Julian is now Risk Manager for a large Higher & Further Education College which delivers a curriculum covering a very wide range of business sectors including the service industries, sport, the arts and film, engineering, motor racing and maritime operations.  This has provided him with a wealth of experience in working with management teams to integrate sensible health & safety management into a very diverse range of activities.

Julian has always believed in the work of IOSH in championing the sensible integration of health & safety management into work and society.  He joined IOSH in 1998 and progressed through the membership grades to his current position of Chartered Member. He has served for many years on the committee in various roles, including that of Vice Chairman and then Chairman of the Branch.  He is also currently a member of the IOSH Council.

Stephen Boggins  - Grad IOSH, Web Champion

Stephen First became involved in health and safety when working within Social Services in the mid 80’s. A move to the voluntary sector as a Corporate Health and Safety Manager saw greater involvement in health and safety and in particular the management of safety.

Stephen has, for a number of years, worked as an independent and has found that the exposure to different sectors has been beneficial in regards to his approach and understanding of not just ‘health and safety’ but other disciplines which are linked, such as Occupational Health and the management of people.

Doug Baguley - CMIOSH, Consultants’ Group Representative

Doug, who is a Chartered Member, spent many years working for Kent County Council, as a Directorate H&S Manager – previously he had worked in IT, general management, construction, civil engineering and open-cast coal mining.

He retired from full time work in 2005, following a serious illness, and, since then, has worked as a part-time independent H&S Consultant, to keep his hand in (and supplement his pension!), and as a part-time Nordic Walking Instructor, which helps him to keep reasonably fit.

He has served on the Branch Executive for many years, in a variety of roles – Newsletter Editor, Secretary, Vice Chairman and Chairman, Public Services Group Representative, BEDA and Web Champion.  During his Chairmanship, he helped to form the South Downs Branch.  In his current role, he is secretary of the Kent Health and Safety Consultants’ Forum, which was set up by the HSE, in Kent, to work with independent consultants, with the aim of improving the standards of service provided by consultants.

He is very proud of the fact that he was awarded the IOSH President’s Distinguished Service Certificate, by Neil Budworth, in 2006.

Gary Beckley - CMIOSH

Following 15 years of exemplary military service, I worked in the private and charity sectors before setting up my own business, SHE Management (UK) Ltd. This business has grown from strength to strength over the years and we now provide consultancy and training services to a varied client base ranging from small and large construction contractors to forestry and arboriculture via food manufacturing and local authorities.  My background has led to experiences as diverse as assessing health hazards from foxes and adders to carrying out an IOSH Managing Safely course whilst under fire in Afghanistan!

Having been a member of IOSH for over 15 years, I feel it is time to put something back.  As a member of the committee I want to support IOSH and its aims and promote effective, sensible and proportionate health and safety in the workplace. I strongly believe that we should be proud of the work we do and continually challenge those who seek to undermine our profession.

Paul Bannister - CMIOSH

Paul has worked within the landbased sector for the past 17 years working and training in commercial horticulture, landscaping and sports turf industries. He currently holds a range of professional qualifications and is a member of professional bodies including IOSH, OSHCR, BASIS, NPTC

Paul is currently self employed as a trainer and consultant providing training and consultancy on a range of disciplines including Pesticide Application, Machinery use as well as health and safety consultancy.

Paul has been a committee member for the South East Branch of IOSH for the past year and is particularly keen on developing the health and safety image especially the perception within the land based sector, one of the sectors with a poor safety record.

Paul Potter -Tech IOSH SP

Following over 7 years of exemplary military service, I worked initially in warehouse production management controlling various projects and organising shipping of finished products internationally. I later moved into security management which is where I became involved in health and safety after completing the NEBOSH General Certificate in 2003.

Since 2003 I have been operating predominantly as a Health and Safety and and Training Manager for a few companies where  my work also involved achieving recognition of compliance with numerous bodies such as CHAS, National Britannia and most importantly, ISO accreditation for 9001, 14001 and OHSAS 18001, which I enjoy doing.

In September 2011 I joined SHE Management as a Trainer /Advisor working across a number of different sectors such as construction, manufacturing and forestry, this has in turn encouraged me to study a lot more in order to generate further knowledge and understanding of health and safety in general.

At present I am in the process of completing the NVQ 5 in Health and Safety enabling me to work towards the graduate level membership of IOSH, an organisation that I have been a member of for nearly 3 years and relish the idea of being more involved with as a part of the committee.
