Construction event in October 2011
Branch Chairman John Cook reflects on the
event
17
November 2011
This was a very successful event aimed at small and medium sized
contractors and their clients. It is interesting to note that the
majority of the delegates were not members of IOSH which as a
branch we may wish to take into account in terms of boosting
attendance by our membership at future events.
Information given by way of presentations can be seen as timely
‘refreshers’ as was the example given by Jan Anderson of a properly
shored trench with edge protection. Tied in with this was the
demonstration of a vacuum excavator that takes excavation and
safety to a higher level.
Still on my thoughts of these events providing ‘refreshers, the
presentation on asbestos provided all who attended with information
on the types of asbestos, the materials that contain asbestos, the
associated health hazards, legislation, management of asbestos and
safety of the workers. I thought that the presentation was of
benefit to delegates who already have an understanding and those
who are new to the danger that is asbestos.
It is my view, as I am sure that it is with many others, that
‘safe’ machinery is the workhorse of the construction site; clearly
highlighted by Speedy Hire who gave a practical presentation on
working at height with a particular emphasis on the small
contractor. Linked into this was the opportunity, provided by
Nationwide Platforms, to view cherry pickers fitted with the latest
technology.
Notwithstanding my comment about machinery, I also feel that the
presentation given by Gordon Crick from the Health and Safety
Executive, who demonstrated the Leadership and
Worker Involvement Toolkit, highlights that workers at all
levels of the organisation need to play their part in maintaining
safety. The toolkit, presented by Gordon, and in particular the
10 key
principles for achieving successful leadership and worker
involvement will, I feel sure, assist with ongoing safety
improvements.
We have all seen in the press the issues around timber-framed
buildings and fire, the presentation given by the Kent Fire and
Rescue Service clearly highlighted the issues. The key element that
I came away with was the need to “Build in fire protection along
the way” I would recommend that you access the presentation for
further comment on timber-framed buildings.
I guess it is fair to say that we stroll along thinking that we
are competent in all that we do; the presentation given by H& K
Services, gave me pause for thought, it never hurts to reflect.
I
am pleased that the event provided opportunity for networking and
gave clients an awareness of their duties whilst at the same time
giving guidance as to the actions required. The event also helped
raise the profile of the assistance available from IOSH and in
particular the role of the South East Branch in getting the message
out there.
Presentations can be accessed from our events page.
