2012 Construction Group Roadshows

London 2012 Learning Legacy

IOSH is supporting the London 2012 Learning Legacy project by disseminating the lessons learned on health and safety through a series of events in the guise of the 2012 Construction Group Roadshows.

The project’s aim is to gather knowledge that can influence, educate and benefit the whole construction industry and act as a showcase for UK PLC.

Each Roadshow will feature a number of key speakers and industry experts including those who have played vital roles both in the build-up to London 2012 and now as the project shares the lessons learnt.

Speakers across the Roadshows will include :

Lawrence Waterman, MSc CFIOSH MFOH FRSA
Olympic Delivery Authority Speaker

Lawrence is currently both Head of Health and Safety for the Olympic Delivery Authority – a post he has held since 2005 – and Head of Health and safety for the Olympic Park Legacy Company (OPLC).  He is a Chartered Fellow of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (CFIOSH) and a Member of the Faculty of Occupational Hygiene (MFOH). 
Lawrence has served on many bodies including the Council of the Parliamentary and Scientific Committee, CONIAC Occupational Health Working Party, ICE Health and Safety Board, the Research Committee of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine, HSE Science Strategy Committee.

Lawrence is a Past President of IOSH, was Project Director for the occupational health pilot Constructing Better Health and chaired the working party which developed guidance on health and safety management systems (Systems in Focus), and is the author of chapters in books on health and safety published by Oxford University Press, the Institute of Directors, and other commercial publishers on a number of topics.  He was the recipient (jointly) of the 1995 Institution of Civil Engineers medal for Safety in Construction, and in 2005 of the RoSPA Distinguished Service Award.

Ian Pattison
Health and Safety Advisor

Ian is responsible for Health and Safety for the construction of the venues and infrastructure on the Olympic Park as well as the offsite ODA venues.

Ian has worked on the programme for 4 ½ years and previously worked on the construction of Heathrow Terminal 5.

Ian graduated as a mechanical engineer and has spent the last 14 years working in Health and Safety.  His career started within the nuclear, airport and marine and defence sectors before moving onto major construction programmes.  He is a Chartered Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (CMIOSH).

Melodie Gilbert
Occupational Health Speaker

As Head of Ill Health Prevention for Park Health, Melodie has been involved in the creation and delivery of a preventative occupational health management strategy at the London 2012 Olympic site since 2007. As an experienced occupational hygienist Melodie has had the opportunity to assess exposures in a number of industries including both construction and demolition. Melodie is also a member of the CONIAC HSE working group on occupational health in construction and is involved in taking the legacy of the 2012 OH project to the wider industry.


Claire Tyers
Occupational Health Speaker

Claire has been conducting evaluations and research for over 15 years, providing solid evidence and recommendations to decision makers in the public and  private sectors. Claire set up her own consultancy in 2010, but prior to that spent 12 years working for the Institute for Employment Studies (IES), which is the UK’s leading independent centre for research and evidence-based consultancy in employment, labour market and human resource policy and practice. Over the last five years, Claire helped IES to establish itself as a major contributor to research on work, health and well-being and ran a research team dedicated to this topic. Claire recently helped deliver a project for the HSE and ODA on leadership and worker involvement on the Olympic Park, is finalising an evaluation of the Occupational Health provision on the site for HSE and ODA and is currently examining ways of estimating the economic returns on investment in preventative Occupational Health for the ODA.


Vincent Busk
London 2012 Contractor and Speaker

Vincent Busk currently holds the respected position of Health, Safety, Quality & Environmental Director for Interior Services Group (ISG) and has taken this now £billion organisation to the pinnacle within the construction industry thus becoming one of the market leaders within its field.

Vincent has over 35 years experience in the construction, rail and petroleum/chemical industry with close to 20 years spent as a Health, Safety and Environmental Professional starting his career in 1972 as a corrosion engineer working for Ceilcote based in Ohio USA. From the outset, he delivered some of their most prestigious large scale projects including those for Pfizer chemical plant (Ireland) Esso refinery (Fawley) and Tuborg Brewery (Denmark) to name but a few. He assumed additional responsibility for a Manufacturing unit in the UK and project delivery in the UK and Europe.

In addition to this role he is a Chartered Safety and Health Practitioner (CMIOSH) and a Director of IOSH. His pragmatic and innovative approach has also seen ISG obtain a number of highly acclaimed awards

IOSH Construction Group Committee members present

David Ackerley 
Chair of IOSH Construction Group

David’s role is to provide strategic leadership to the work of the committee, oversee all its activities and to ensure they keep in touch with the needs of their members, especially in the context of what is happening in the wider world of construction safety management. He wants to bring about a fresh approach to the service the committee provide and, in line with this, introduce a range of objectives and programs that will have measurable practical benefits.

David is an Associate Director with Capita Symonds London office, responsible for the delivery of professional health and safety, and CDM consultancy services to a wide range of public and private sector clients. He has over 15 years post-qualification experience in health and safety management, both as a principal advisor and as a consultant.

He has worked in many industry sectors, including construction, banking, retail, service industries, education and the pharmaceutical industry and have been responsible for advising clients on the practical management of health and safety within their organisations.

He is also responsible for the development and delivery of bespoke health and safety advice and training to Capita Symonds clients.

David has a post graduate diploma in occupational health and safety from the University of Greenwich and is a chartered health and safety practitioner.

Bob Arnold 
Vice-chair of IOSH Construction Group

Bob is the web champion for the IOSH Construction Group, a role whish is concerned with making sure the web pages meet the requirements of the members.

Bob’s current responsibilities for Brookfield Multiplex Construction include Health, Safety and Environment for its European and Canadian operations. Brookfield Multiplex Construction’s current projects include the Pinnacle Tower and 100 Bishopsgate, both in the City of London, the new Southern General Hospital in Glasgow and the Trump Tower in Toronto. He is also a director of a newly formed Brookfield Multiplex CDM Coordination Company.

Bob is a chartered member of IOSH, a chartered environmentalist and a chartered engineer. He has over twenty years’ experience as a Corporate Group Health and Safety Director with Mowlem, Alfred McAlpine and currently Brookfield Multiplex having previously been a project director on large construction projects.

Steffan Groch  
Legal Champion of IOSH Construction Group

Steffan brings a wealth of experience and insight in the world of health and safety law to the Construction Group Committee. Steffan wants to help IOSH members understand health and safety law, including the way it is interpreted by the courts.

Steffan is a Partner and is Head of the DWF’s Regulatory team. He has advised companies, directors and managers in respect of a variety of health, safety and environment prosecutions brought by the Health and Safety Executive, Local Authorities and the Environment Agency. Steffan, in conjunction with his team, advises proactively on health and safety systems and procedures, with a particular emphasis on corporate manslaughter, directors’ duties and tackling safety cultures within the workplace.

Steffan and his team handle dozens of HSE and general regulatory matters each year. Steffan is commended as Best of UK both in the Legal 500 and Chambers and Partners.
