Construction project features in new campaign
2 June 2011
The group health and safety manager at a construction contractor
has been profiled as part of IOSH’s new Li£e Savings campaign.
Andrew Denby, a Technician Member of IOSH, was instrumental in
developing a new work safety strategy at Tamdown Group, and his
work has been captured in one of a series of new case studies
showcasing the work of IOSH members.
The Li£e Savings campaign has a simple message – with first
class health and safety management, businesses can not only save
lives, they can also save money. The campaign shows that
significant ‘side benefits’ can include cost savings, operational
efficiencies, greater productivity and profitability, a more
motivated workforce and an enhanced reputation.
Tamdown, based in the south east and employing around 600
people, created a series of new safe work systems and a behavioural
safety and worker engagement scheme. The motivation behind the move
was based on standing out from its industry rivals in a tough
competitive market. The company’s new approach has seen employer
and public liability insurance premiums cut by £50,000 a year and a
further saving of up to £25,000 a year as a result of a drop in the
number of accidents. Rates have gone from an average eight
RIDDOR-reportable accidents in a year to just one.
Says Andrew: “We’ve seen new thinking really transform a site,
and productivity and performance have improved.”
