2010 communication - seven point plan
January 2010
First of all the Hazardous Industries Group (HIG) Committee
would like to wish everyone a happy and prosperous 2010. To start
the year off we thought it would be an opportune time to share with
you what is in store for the near future. After reviewing a number
of the statements and comments from the 2009 PARN and Groups survey
the following items have been placed on to a simple seven point
plan that we hope will offer members of the HIG information and
resources that they will find useful as well as providing a way for
everyone of us to get directly involved in HIG activities and
output.
The seven point plan is:
• Peer Review Process - Continuation of the excellent work that
has been done so far.
o The Peer Review Sub-Committee are
scheduled to meet with Professor Dick Turner and Judith Hackitt
(Chair of HSE Board) during January to discuss the next stages
required to progress the process and expand it to a wider
audience.
• Provide active support for members regarding CPD
o This will be achieved by raising the
general awareness of the CPD process, we aim to provide members
with an understanding of the mechanics involved moreover creating
mentoring opportunities within the HIG.
• Overhaul of the HIG Committee
o This will ensure that everyone has a clear
and concise focus on their roles and functions in the committee as
well as allowing longstanding personnel to pass on the baton to
others who wish to play a bigger part in the development of
HIG.
• Call for new committee members from the group membership
o Providing an opportunity to introduce
fresh ideas and impetus.
• ‘Lunch and Learn’ networking events
o Continuation of the partnership with ABB
in providing free networking opportunities on specific subject
areas across many parts of the UK (Full details for the 2010
venues, subject areas and dates will be made available in the near
future).
• Develop a process for sharing high value learning events
between group members
o This will be a process for sharing
incidents, experiences, and/or learning across Safety Critical
Industry and develop a Corporate Memory for IOSH members to tap
into to prevent repeat or similar adverse incidents/experiences
that have occurred at other sites or locations. This process system
will primarily focus on the “significant few” events that have
catastrophic or significant potential. It will link and align with
other web sites such as the HSE and STEP Change in Safety web sites
to name but two.
• Design and implement the HIG Good Practice 1,000 club
The first item that we are launching from the seven point plan
is the ‘HIG Good Practice 1,000 Club’ which is a new initiative
that will link in to, and utilise the new website. The aim of the
initiative is to provide a repository for good practice that the
HIG can share with its fellow members and the wider IOSH
membership. Details of how to participate in this will follow
shortly, we can all become members of the ‘1,000 Club’ so do your
bit and take up the challenge!
Here’s to a productive yet safe and healthy 2010.
