Should Quads be fitted with roll-over protection?

5 January 2012

The debate regarding the benefit of some form of roll-over protection for Quads has been re-opened by developments in Australia where the concept of a Passive Roll Over  Protective ( PROP’s) structure has been developed.  This is a metal column fitted to the rear of the Quad to above operator head height. Research carried out in Australia indicates that this device can potentially prevent 30% of fatalities associated with over-turning Quad’s.

This is a contentious issue and authoritative opinion remains divided, with some calls for further research. RIG is not in a position to make any recommendation at this stage. It is also  important the issue of ROPS does not divert attention away from other key safety messages - the importance of wearing head protection, formal rider training, maintenance of the machine, proper route planning, safe riding techniques, safe use etc. Health and Safety Executive
