Hello and welcome to
Connect
Hello and welcome to another issue of Connect.
While all eyes will be on the World Cup in South Africa over the
next few weeks, it’s not just Theo Walcott and the Republic of
Ireland squad who are notable absentees from their work…
According to a recent survey, one in seven UK workers are
planning to watch every World Cup game, sparking fears that
absenteeism could reach record levels. And of the 1,000 workers
interviewed, only 10 per cent had sought permission to take time
off.
Staying with football, but on a much more serious note, Aston
Villa has been fined £1,350 after a worker fell three metres
through a fragile rooflight in an accident at the club’s training
ground. The club and its contractor, Mechanical Cleansing Services,
both admitted health and safety offences.
In this issue of Connect, we feature the second part of
our fire risk assessment series. This time, we look at identifying
the people at risk.
We also take a look at a recent court case involving a fire at a
high-street retailer. With record fines imposed and increased
enforcement activity taking place, could now be a good time for
organisations to renew their fire risk management and safety
procedures?
As well as news and features, we also have a number of
Professional Development course details included in the MyCareer
section.

Many thanks for reading.
