Connect hits a golden
milestone
After 50 issues and more than 100 features,
we look at some of Connect’s achievements and find
out where the e-bulletin goes from here…
The
Ministry of Defence,
Alton Towers,
Jeremy Clarkson,
ghosts and
postmen. What do all these have in common? Answer: they’ve all
featured in Connect!
We’ve covered a wide range of topics, from the challenges of being
the health and safety manager at Alton Towers to the impact of new
health and safety legislation at
Wellingborough Prison, as well as the importance of
psychological wellbeing to workers on the
London Underground.
These articles demonstrate the range of issues that health and
safety can cover and the myriad challenges a health and safety
professional might have to face – whether it's risk
assessing the arrival of the
Tardis on the steps of the Royal Albert Hall or working with
the Ministry of Defence to learn lessons from the deaths and
injuries suffered by troops in operations and training.
As well as these features, we’ve provided a detailed breakdown
of new health and safety legislation, such as the
Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide
Act (which we covered in our very first issue) and
the groundbreaking
Health and Safety (Offences) Act.
We’ve covered member stories such as
Phil Blomberg’s quest to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro
and we’ve provided expert guidance on issues such as
Respiratory Protection Equipment (RPE),
workplace harassment,
disability discrimination and
lone working. We’ve also kept you up to date with important
legal developments in our
case law series.
Connect is also an essential way for IOSH to
communicate with you, our members. We give you the details of
hundreds of Branch and Group events every week through
Connect and Connect Diary, as well as providing
up-to-the-minute industry news, IOSH updates and YouTube interviews
from high-profile contributors at our conferences and events. We
also feature job opportunities and details of Professional
Development courses to help you progress in your career.
We’ve had some recognition for our efforts at the MemCom Awards
in 2009, when we beat off stiff competition from other professional
membership bodies to scoop a ‘Highly commended’ award. The most
important recognition though comes from our readers – thousands of
you read Connect regularly and in a member survey it was
rated the second most valued of all IOSH services.
So, where do we go from here? Well, we’ve got plenty of ideas in
the pipeline for future articles and projects (keep your eye out
for some podcasts in the near future) and we’re always interested
to hear your ideas and comments – email our e-Editor Shaun Gibbons with any
feedback you may have.
In the meantime, take a look at the articles and images on our
feature wall.
