Connect: Election Special
Election Special 2010 – Connect on the campaign
trail
With the UK General Election
campaign now in full swing, voters have the chance to study
the differences between each of the political parties on a wide
range of issues ahead of 6 May. Connect took the
opportunity to talk to each of the main UK political parties,
asking them to spell out their policies on a range of topics
surrounding health and safety.
Two weeks before the UK election was announced, Connect
contacted the Conservative Party, the Democratic Unionist Party,
the Labour Party, the Liberal Democrats, Plaid Cymru, the Scottish
National Party and Sinn Féin, asking them to respond to a
number of questions relating to health and safety.
To help us ask the right questions, we invited Connect
readers to contribute your thoughts on what topics you’d like
your political leaders to answer.
Below are the questions. Click on each question to read how each
party responded. We’ve also introduced a voting system so you
can register which party you think provides the best
response.
Question one
Does your party think we have the right
health and safety legislation?
If not, what changes should there be?
Question two
Does your party think we have the right
level of health and safety enforcement? If not, what changes should
there be?
Question three
Does your party believe that the
so-called ‘compensation culture’ is a significant problem? If so,
how would your party tackle it?
Question four
What are your party’s views on the
introduction of a free, national on-line register of accredited
health and safety consultants with appropriate qualifications and
experience?
Question five
To what extent, if any, does your party
think basic health and safety should be embedded in our national
education and training system…and why?
If you feel strongly enough to want to comment on a particular
question or answer, why not post your thoughts
here?
