IOSH talks to MPs
14 March 2011
President Steve Granger led an IOSH
delegation to the House of Commons for a cross-party discussion
with MPs on the Lord Young Review.
Chief Executive Rob Strange OBE, Executive Director Policy Luise
Vassie, Policy and Technical Director Richard Jones and Interim
Communications Director Ian Smart joined Steve for the event, which
brought parliamentarians from opposing benches.
Dame Anne Begg MP, chair of the work and pensions select
committee, sponsored the occasion, which explored how a balanced
and professional approach to health and safety in the workplace can
support business recovery, jobs and the Government’s growth
agenda.
Steve said: “Today’s event provided an
opportunity for cross-bench politics to discuss the problematic
issues associated with implementing Lord Young’s findings. In
particular, how large, successful organisations can share the
importance of health and safety with the small business
community.”
With Lord Young no longer in post as Government adviser, IOSH
wants to consolidate its position as an influential voice on
Government plans to reform health and safety.
Conservative MP Heather Wheeler, member of
the local government all-party group, said: “I am particularly
interested that you are a charity and you are getting the message
out to smaller companies and independent workers.
“It’s very useful for IOSH to come into the
House of Commons to discuss the issues with parliamentarians from
every party. It gives you the opportunity to have full and frank
discussions and put your issues across.”
Lord Davies of Oldham, who chaired the
debate, said: “It’s the most valuable lunch, because it gives us
the chance to discuss the importance of the Lord Young reforms and
the way we can respond positively.”
