Pat on the back from Dame Carol Black
21 October 2011

The UK Government’s Director for Health and
Work, Dame Carol Black, commended IOSH last night (20 October) at
the SHP IOSH Awards ceremony in London.
In her address at the SHP IOSH Awards 2011,
Dame Carol told attendees: “I have seen how the health and
wellbeing of employees can contribute to successful
organisations.
“I am interested in Life Savings – this
campaign has a very deep resonance with the Independent Government
Review of Sickness Absence. I fully support IOSH’s stance that
investing in health and safety can bring about a return on
investment.”
This was the fifth year of the event, which
acknowledges the cream of the health and safety crop with awards
for outstanding individual and organisational initiatives.
IOSH president Steve Granger presented Dr Paul
Oldershaw with a lifetime achievement award for his work in the
occupational hygiene field.
Steve said: “We are indebted to people like
Paul for improving the safety, and particularly the health of
people in workplaces around the world. I am sure you agree, it
would be difficult to find a more worthy winner.”
For more than 30 years Paul Oldershaw was a
key player in occupational hygiene in the UK, the EU and globally.
He started his career for the Factory Inspectorate in 1974. During
his time at the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), Dr Oldershaw
worked on a number of influential projects that have helped to
improve occupational hygiene. He was involved in the development of
the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations
and has actively been involved in promoting hygiene
internationally.
Dr Oldershaw said: “I am delighted to have
been given this award from IOSH. It means a lot for my work to have
been recognised by the biggest industry body. When starting my
career back in 1974 I did not imagine myself ever being so honoured
for my efforts.”
