Turkish and Dutch health and safety professionals visit
accident blackspot
Health and safety experts from Turkey and
the Netherlands today (24 January) visited the construction site
for the new A46 Newark to Widmerpool Project in
Nottinghamshire.
The visit was organised by the Institution of
Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) as part of a three-day study
trip for the delegates to learn about best practice occupational
health and safety in the UK.
As a new European Union (EU) accession
country, Turkey has a number of gaps to fill between EU
occupational health and safety legislation and its own. Until it
bridges these and other such gaps, Turkey cannot become a full
member of the EU.
Sarah Hamilton, Networks and International
Director at IOSH, said: “We are delighted to have been chosen to
lead the delegation’s study trip here in the UK.
“As the world’s leading organisation for
occupational safety and health professionals, we have an array of
knowledge to share with those who need it.
“Balfour Beatty has an excellent health and
safety track record, and the A46 site is a prime example of how a
road construction site should be run.”
Balfour Beatty started work on the stretch of
road between Newark and Widmerpool back in 2009, in the hope of
improving congestion and reducing the number of deaths on the
road.
The company prides itself on the way it looks
after workers’ health and safety. Having a happy workforce means it
is able to work more efficiently and effectively when creating
quality roads for the British public.
Sally Brearley, Health and Safety Director
for Balfour Beatty, said: “We're delighted to host IOSH and their
Turkish and Dutch visitors at our A46 project.
"We aim for the highest standards of Health
and Safety, and are pleased to share our Zero Harm approach with
them."
