Safety experts praise Dangerpoint
Health and safety experts in North Wales
today (Thursday 21 July 2011) praised the region’s safety awareness
centre for its commitment to educating young people.
Twenty professionals from the Institution of Occupational Safety
and Health’s (IOSH) North Wales branch visited DangerPoint in
Talacre to offer practical safety advice and share ideas to help
the charity going forward.
Lawrence Bamber, vice chair of IOSH North
Wales branch, said: “DangerPoint should be commended and used by
local schools as and when possible. It is a resource which should
be utilised to its full potential to give children first-hand
experience of real risk.”
The Institution’s praise of the local centre comes after years
of Government lobbying to incorporate risk education into the
national curriculum.
Lawrence added: “Schools should be teaching
children how to be risk-savvy rather than cancelling school trips
and adventure activities.
“Students should get to try out new
experiences away from the confines of the classroom – and be
encouraged to learn to think independently. We believe that
teaching children to be aware of but, not scared of risks, will set
them up for life and DangerPoint can help to achieve this.”
Lawrence has worked as a health and safety professional for 40
years. His dedication and commitment to the industry has lead him
to offer his services to DangerPoint as a Trustee.
Cat Harvey, project co-ordinator at
DangerPoint, said: “We are delighted to have welcomed health and
safety professionals from across the North of Wales here today.
They have not only given us competent advice but some excellent
ideas on other scenarios we could introduce to the centre going
forward – to benefit the children and the wider community.
“We are looking forward to working with
Lawrence and other members of the IOSH North Wales branch going
forward, to teach children within the area how to manage the ‘real
risks’ they may encounter as part of day-to-day life in a safe
environment.”
