Local student commended
A 36-year-old student has scooped an award
for his research into back pain at a ceremony in London.
Chukwuka Maduekeh from Stanford-le-Hope, Essex, was commended
for his work looking into musculoskeletal disorders by the London
Metropolitan Branch of the Institution of Occupational Safety and
Health (IOSH).
As well as an award for his research, Chukwuka was presented
with a cash prize at the student award presentations this week.
Chukwuka’s research, ‘Musculoskeletal disorders and associated
factors amongst special needs transport workers’ was part of his
MSc in Occupational Health and Safety Management at Brunel
University.
Mature student Chukwuka said: “I’m over the
moon that my research has been recognised by the IOSH London
Metropolitan Branch.
“It’s estimated that more than half a
million workers suffered from musculoskeletal disorders last year
alone caused, or made worse, by work. My research was used by the
London Borough of Harrow and I’m delighted that the results helped
them to put new policies in place.”
Paul Williams, chair of IOSH’s London
Metropolitan Branch, said: “Chukwuka’s research was commended for
its common sense approach to health and safety. Although the
research was extremely niche, it addressed issues for the London
Borough of Harrow’s health and safety team which made a
difference.
“Occupational health and safety is
important in any workplace and investing in health and safety can
save businesses thousands of pounds each year. Recognising the
research conducted into the field is really important to enable the
health and safety profession to continue to grow.”
