N&I Committee: be part of it

30 July 2010

Do you have the experience to advise top-level decision-makers? Would you like to share your expertise with others while learning new skills that you can use to develop your career? Do you want to find out what it’s like to influence a global professional membership organisation? If so, then IOSH’s new Networks and International Committee could be the place for you.

We’re looking for members to join this new committee, which will meet four times each year. You’ll be acting as a channel to bring our members’ views right to the decision-making heart of IOSH. And you’ll present new ideas that could benefit our networks across the world.

There are huge benefits to be gained from being part of the committee, says IOSH networks and international director Sarah Hamilton: “Committee members will be involved in a continuous cycle of improvement, developing and enhancing IOSH branches, groups, districts and sections. They’ll be able to present ideas and initiate evidence-based changes.”

Being part of the committee gives you the chance to benefit from a unique and valuable learning experience. You’ll be entering a forum where you can learn and develop transferable management skills that will help to boost your career development. As well as exposing yourself to a new area of influence, you’ll get good general management training, and you’ll experience the practical challenges involved in delivering change in a large organisation.

“We’re looking for members who can think creatively, offer constructive advice and, where necessary, challenge the ideas of others,” says Sarah. “Working in an advisory capacity, committee members will be able to try out new, creative ideas and see real results. They’ll be able to advise and influence IOSH at the highest levels, such as the Board of Trustees and Council.”

Target your influence

In addition to the Networks and International Committee, we’re looking for members to join some of the six Member Advisory Panels that will focus on specific areas.

Group reviews – use your experience of performance management and reviews to mentor your peers. You’ll be providing independent member leadership for regular reviews of groups, and helping specific groups to reflect on their own performance and plans.

Major projects – your experience in project management, especially for large projects involving different stakeholders, will help you to mentor branches and groups in their planning of major projects.

Online member engagement – if you’ve got significant experience with information and communications technology (ICT), you could contribute to our online member engagement advisory panel. You’ll be mentoring your peers and sharing ideas and good practice on the best ways for branches, groups, districts and sections to use technology to enhance support, services and activities for their members. You’ll also help to identify ideas, good practice and new developments from the wider business community, which can be adapted by IOSH to add value for network members.

Conciliation/mediation – if branches or districts disagree with each other, or a dispute arises, we need experienced mediators to provide input and mediation/conciliation service and ensure that the relevant codes of conduct and IOSH processes are being followed.

“We know that many IOSH members have the attitude, experience and expertise we’re looking for,” concludes Sarah. “We’re looking forward to welcoming them to the Networks and International Committee and the Member Advisory Panels, and to seeing the value these new influential bodies will deliver both for the volunteers who take part in it and for IOSH members across the world.”
