New President for world’s leading professional health and
safety body
The world’s largest body for health and safety professionals
recently welcomed its new President to lead the organisation for
the coming year.
Steve Granger was inaugurated at the Leicester-based Institution
of Occupational Safety and Health’s (IOSH) Annual Networks
Conference.
On his first address after taking the baton from Immediate Past
President John Holden, he encouraged a positive approach for the
tough times ahead and said he wanted IOSH members to be at the
heart of business decisions, and to provide help and support on
health and safety issues over the coming year.
Steve, from Midhurst, West Sussex, said: “I
am immensely proud to be the face of IOSH for 2011. I’m looking
forward to playing a role in ensuring that the organisation is the
definitive voice of health and safety across the world.”
He also referred to Lord Young’s ‘Common Sense – Common Safety’
review as a great educational tool for those who wanted to find out
what has gone wrong with the public perception of health and
safety.
“The report provides an excellent observation
tower to see where we have been, where we are, and where we are
going.
“It is quite clear he is not pointing the
blame at our professionalism, in fact to the contrary - he welcomes
our help,” he added.
On the year ahead, Steve revealed that he felt IOSH was in a
position to do more in the way of disaster management, using the
expertise within its membership.
“IOSH has a supportive role to play where our
safety experts are concerned and I believe we can help to deliver
both immediate and longer term support to existing relief
organisations,” he added.
At the conference on 8 and 9 November, he also said that the
safety experts IOSH has across industries including demolition,
repair, design, construction and civil engineering, could ‘help
make a difference in the long game of societal repair’.
Steve began his career with the Royal Navy in Portsmouth,
serving an engineering apprenticeship. A Chartered Member of IOSH,
he has worked in education, the public sector and business
consultancy and is a director of The Granger Partnership Ltd in
West Sussex.
