Training for young people
We developed the free Workplace Hazard
Awareness Course (WHAC) to help teachers prepare year 10 students
for work experience and their first job. It's part of the 'Putting young workers first' campaign, which
aims to improve health and safety awareness for teenagers.
The course is a no-nonsense guide to how to protect
yourself and your colleagues at work, and what your employer should
be doing to keep you safe. It encourages young workers to take a
proactive and positive approach to health and safety at work, and
to use their common sense.
WHAC takes around six hours to deliver and has more than 20
activities, including an interactive presentation with film clips,
teacher guide, workbook, evidence sheets and extension work. It
supports an entry-level qualification offered by British Safety
Council Awards.
The course has eight sections:
- What is health and safety?
- Hazards and harm A
- Hazards and harm B
- Safety signs
- Hazardous working conditions
- Protection
- Prevention and care
- Health and safety responsibilities
If you're a teacher or you deliver free or publicly funded
training, you can register to use the
free learning materials.
